Featuring fifteen Easter hymns, including two Bach chorales, some of William Williams Pantycelyn’s best-known hymns, and a number of new descants and harmonisations, the recording is accompanied by a booklet containing the music and words of each hymn.

The launch event will begin at 7.30pm, with the choir singing some of the hymns featured on the CD alongside a selection of Lenten and Easter music. This will be followed by a celebratory reception and an opportunity to purchase the CD.

Coron driphlyg yng Ngŵyl Fawr Aberteifi | A hat-trick of wins for the choir

Cafodd y côr benwythnos i’w gofio yng Ngŵyl Fawr Aberteifi eleni. Ar ôl dod i’r brig yng nghystadleuaeth y corau cymysg, cipiodd y côr dlws Côr yr Ŵyl. Dyfarnodd y beirniad corawl, Trystan Lewis, dlws Arweinydd yr Ŵyl i’n harweinydd, Gwennan Williams, gan roi tair buddugoliaeth i’r côr ar noson lwyddiannus.

The choir enjoyed great success at this year’s Gŵyl Fawr Aberteifi, Cardigan’s annual festival of music and verse. Having won the mixed choir competition, the choir was named Choir of the Festival. The choral adjudicator, Trystan Lewis, also awarded the Conductor of the Festival prize to our director, Gwennan Williams, making it a hat-trick of wins for the choir.

Dewch i ddathlu’r Nadolig | Join us to celebrate Christmas

Mae tymor y Nadolig yn adeg brysur i bob côr – a dyw Côr ABC ddim yn eithriad. Yn wir, mae wedi dechrau yn gynt na’r arfer eleni, gyda’r côr yn canu carolau i ddiddanu ymwelwyr â’r Ffair Fwyd Nadolig yng Nghanolfan y Celfyddyau, Aberystwyth ddiwedd mis Tachwedd!

Ond, peidiwch â phoeni, os na chawsoch chi gyfle i ymuno â ni yn hwyl yr ŵyl fwyd, bydd cyfle arall i chi ddod i ddathlu’r Nadolig gyda ni, a hynny yn ein cyngerdd ‘Naw Llith a Charolau’ yn Eglwys Padarn Sant, Llanbadarn Fawr, nos Sul 10 Rhagfyr am 7.30pm.

Rydym yn estyn gwahoddiad i drigolion Aberystwyth a’r fro ymuno â ni i fwynhau noson o garolau traddodiadol a cherddoriaeth hyfryd yr Adfent gan gyfansoddwyr cyfoes, gan gynnwys James MacMillan ac Arvo Pärt. Byddwn ni hefyd yn rhoi perfformiad cyntaf fersiwn pedwar llais o ‘Alleluia’ gan Andrew Cusworth. Bydd cyfle i chi ymuno â ni i ganu ambell i garol – a bydd pwnsh poeth a mins peis ar gael i bawb ar ôl y cyngerdd.

Does dim tâl mynediad, ond byddwn yn rhoi unrhyw roddion i’r elusen leol, HAHAV – Hosbis yn y Cartref Aberystwyth.

Ond nid dyna’r cyfan – cyn i Siôn Corn ddechrau ar ei daith, byddwn ni hefyd yn canu carol neu ddwy yn noson garolau gymunedol Neuadd Rhydypennau, Bow Street, o dan arweiniad ein harweinydd ni, Gwennan Williams, nos Sul, 17 Rhagfyr.

Felly, dewch i ymuno â ni i ddathlu’r Nadolig – ac i weld a fyddwn ni’n canu eich hoff garol chi!

Ewch i’r gwaelod i gael tamed i aros pryd!

The Christmas season is a busy one for every choir, and Côr ABC is no exception. The season started early this year, with the choir singing carols to entertain visitors to the Christmas Food Fair in Aberystwyth Arts Centre at the end of November!

But, worry not if you were unable to join us for the festive fun of the food fair: there is another chance for you to celebrate Christmas with us at our ‘Nine Lessons and Carols’ concert in St Padarn’s Church, Llanbadarn Fawr, at 7.30pm on Sunday 10th December.

We extend a warm invitation to the residents of Aberystwyth and beyond to join us for an evening of traditional carols, and of advent music by living composers, including James MacMillan and Arvo Pärt. We will also be giving the first performance of the four part version of ‘Alleluia’ by Andrew Cusworth. There will be an opportunity to raise your own voice in some favourite carols, and there will be hot punch and mince pies for all after the concert.

There is no entry fee, but donations will be taken on the door on behalf of the local charity, HAHAV – Hospice at Home Aberystwyth.

What’s more, before Father Christmas begins his journey, we will be singing a carol or two in a community evening of carols at Neuadd Rhydypennau, Bow Street, under the direction of our conductor, Gwennan Williams, on Sunday 17 December.

So come and join us in celebrating Christmas and find out if we sing your favourite carol!

Cyhoeddi ‘Gosber’ | ‘Gosber’ published

Rydym yn falch iawn bod Gosber, darn a gomisiynwyd gan y côr, wedi’i gyhoeddi’n ddiweddar gan Curiad.

Gosodiad gan Andrew Cusworth o englyn o’r un enw gan Dafydd John Pritchard yw Gosber. Fe’i perfformiwyd am y tro cyntaf gan Gôr ABC o dan arweiniad Gwennan Williams yn Eglwys Padarn, Llanbadarn Fawr, ar 30 Tachwedd 2014. Gallwch glywed recordiad o’r perfformiad hwnnw ar waelod y dudalen.

Yn ôl y cyfansoddwr, ’Mae’r englyn yn cyfuno delweddau o fyd natur a’r traddodiad catholig i greu ymdeimlad o lonyddwch disgwylgar a myfyrgar, a darlun teimladwy o hanfod gweddi. O ran y gerddoriaeth, mae’r alaw a’r cordiau sy’n pendilio fel sain clychau, ynghyd â’r lliwiau harmonig cyfyngedig ond amwys, yn adleisio’r rhinweddau hyn. Ar y cyfan, mae’n ddarn synfyfyriol sy’n codi, am ennyd, i uchafbwynt angerddol, cyn dychwelyd at naws y weddi a’r ddefod dawel a bortreadir yn yr englyn gan ddelwedd y paderau yng nghyrff deri.’

Mae’r côr wedi perfformio’r darn hudolus hwn droeon, ac mae’n agos iawn at galon y côr gan fod Andrew a Dafydd yn aelodau ohono. Llongyfarchiadau i chi’ch dau!

We are very pleased that Gosber, a piece commissioned by the choir, has been published recently by Curiad.

Gosber by Andrew Cusworth is a setting of an englyn of the same name by Dafydd John Pritchard. The first performance of the piece was given by Côr ABC and its conductor Gwennan Williams in St Padarn’s Church, Llanbadarn Fawr, on November 30th 2014. A recording of the first performance is below.

The composer writes, ‘The englyn, the title of which can be rendered as ‘vesper’ in English, combines imagery from the natural world and the catholic tradition to create an atmosphere of expectant stillness and introspection, a poignant quintessence of prayerfulness. Musically, these qualities are echoed by the bell-like, pendulous motion of the chords and melody, and by the restricted but ambiguous harmonic palette. On the whole, the piece is thoughtful, an affect interrupted only momentarily by a passionate outpouring; after this brief catharsis, the piece turns inwards, to the internalised prayer and ritual represented in the englyn by the image of rosaries hidden in the trunks of oaks.’

The choir has performed this haunting piece on numerous occasions, and it is of particular significance to the choir as both the poet and the composer are members. Congratulations to you both!

Gwyliau haf | Summer festivals

Roedd hi’n wych gweld cerddoriaeth a’r celfyddydau’n cael lle mor amlwg yng nghalendr Aberystwyth dros yr haf, ac roedd y côr yn falch iawn o gymryd rhan mewn dwy ŵyl, MusicFest a Hen Linell Bell.

Bu’r côr yn perfformio yng Nghanolfan y Celfyddydau yn ystod MusicFest, gan ganu rhaglen o ddarnau amrywiol, o ddarnau corawl Whitacre a Lauridsen i alawon gwerin a hyd yn oed ychydig o jazz.

Bu’r côr hefyd yn perfformio ar y prom yn ystod Gwledd Gwyddno, uchafbwynt gŵyl Hen Linell Bell. Buom yn canu nifer o alawon gwerin sy’n gysylltiedig â’r môr, yn ogystal â Chwedl Seithenyn sy’n adrodd hanes boddi Maes Gwyddno – dewis addas ar gyfer yr achlysur!

It was great to see music and the arts in general taking such a prominent position in Aberystwyth over the Summer, and the choir was very pleased to be take part in two festivals – MusicFest and The Far Old Line

The choir performed in the Arts Centre during MusicFest, singing a varied programme, from choral pieces by Whitacre and Lauridsen to folk songs and even to a little jazz.

We also performed on the Prom for Gwyddno’s Feast, the high point of The Far Old Line festival, at which we sang a number of shanty-like songs, as well as Chwedl Seithenyn, which told the story of the prince’s fateful negligence in song – an apt choice for the occasion!

Steddfota

Yn ddiweddar, rydyn ni wedi cael cryn lwyddiant – a lot o hwyl – yn cystadlu yn nwy o eisteddfodau Ceredigion.

A hithau’n dathlu ei phumed pen-blwydd, roedden ni’n falch iawn o gefnogi Eisteddfod Calan Mai Aberystwyth, gan ennill y wobr gyntaf am y pedwerydd tro ar ôl blwyddyn o seibiant.

Ar ôl crwydro i dde’r sir, fe gawson ni hefyd noson i’w chofio yng Ngŵyl Fawr Aberteifi, gan ennill yr ail wobr yng nghystadleuaeth y corau cymysg. Roedd hi’n wledd o ganu corawl, ac yn bleser cael bod yng nghwmni’r pedwar côr arall. Doedd y canu yn y clwb rygbi ar ddiwedd y noson ddim yn rhy ddrwg chwaith!

Rydyn ni’n edrych ‘mlaen at ein steddfod nesa nawr. Tybed lle’r awn ni?

We have had some success recently – not to mention a lot of fun – competing at two of Ceredigion’s eisteddfodau.

Our local eisteddfod in Aberystwyth celebrated its fifth anniversary this year, and we were pleased to win the choir competition for the fourth time after a year’s break.

We also had a memorable night at Cardigan’s Gŵyl Fawr, winning the second prize in the mixed choir competition. It was a feast of choral singing, and a pleasure to be in the company of the other four choirs. The singing in the rugby club later on that evening wasn’t too bad either!

We are now looking forward to our next competition!
